When I first started looking at this whole whirlwind around the country the ting that decided me was the ability to go to St Lucia and Martinique. For the rhum obsessed like me it was my golden chance to go visit the mother ship. Islands rising out of an azure sea, full rigged ships plying the waves, lush jungles, and most importantly cask upon cask of rhum as far as the eye could see, as soon as that image sprang to mind clicking the button to buy the ticket was pretty much a foregone conclusion. Crossing the continent again and then heading for points south, I swear I could smell the rhum in the air as the plane got closer and closer to St Continue reading

I’m sure I’ve mentioned this before, but I love rum. I mean, I really love rum. I also love Tiki. Not as much as some of the tiki nuts out there, but I do enjoy my tiki a lot. I love the kitsch, the toys, the crazy glassware, the funky clothes, and the crazy over the top drinks. On top of all of that, is the reliance and enthusiasm for rum that comes with it. One of the latest temples of rum and tiki opened in the last year in San Francisco. Smuggler’s Cove is a wonderful dark cave of rum and libations, tucked behind an unassuming door, walking in the door is like stepping into some wild idealization of a fevered rum dream, and rum there is.
I love rum. Rummy, rum, rum. Rum for me, rum for you, but mostly rum for me. Years ago, my friend Keith Waldbauer helped to create an obsessed monster while he was tending bar at Union. Then by the power of the interwebs and Tales of the Cocktail I met other like minded folks like Matt Robold, Blair Reynolds, and Craig Hermann. We waxed poetic over rum and intense geekery. Make no mistake, if you care enough about anything to blog about it, you are a geek. After all, if you just liked something, or were normal, would you take the time to write about it, take pictures and make sure people knew what the hell your opinion was about it? Nope, didn’t think so.
So, I’m nuts about rum. That isn’t to say that I don’t love other spirits, I just have an unabashed favourite spirit. Dark rum, light rum, rum industrial, rhum agricole, old rum, young rum, spiced rum, dry rum, sweet rum, thick rum, thin rum, really old rum, really really old rum, rum, rum, rum, rum, rum I will drink it all and chances are I will enjoy it. So to spread the gospel of rum, welcome to my first review of a rum.
